Sony announces retro PlayStation Classic with 20 games

Nintendo has proven that retro consoles get people excited. Sony also wants to play so the company is introducing PlayStation Classic with 20 pre-installed games. It is a tribute to the original PlayStation.

25 years after PlayStation 1

In late 1994, Sony introduced its first PlayStation console. It was the start of a golden era for the Japanese company that has cemented its position in the market for console gaming with PlayStation 2, 3, and 4.

- "Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by then Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics for the first time in their own homes," the company said.

The new retro console is a tribute to the original PlayStation. It is approximately 45% smaller than the original and will be called PlayStation Classic. It comes with 20 pre-installed and popular games, including Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4, Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, and Wild Arms. The rest of the line-up will be announced later.

Included in the box are two PS1 controllers for multiplayer gaming. The retro console can be connected to modern TVs via HDMI.

Besides marking the 25-year anniversary of the PlayStation brand, Sony may have found inspiration not far from home. Nintendo, the other gaming company from Japan, has launched retro consoles in the form of NES and SNES Classic. These have proven so popular that Nintendo has struggled to keep up with demand. Sony has not commented on the supply situation for PlayStation Classic.

Sony PlayStation Classic will be available on December 3, 2018. It will cost $100 / €99.99 / Ł89.99. The console is available for pre-order on amazon.com.
