Vudu adds 4K Dolby Vision support for Sony TVs

20 Sep 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

The company has pushed out an update to its Android TV app, enabling owners of 2016 and 2017 Sony LCD and OLED TVs to watch Vudu in 4K HDR10 and Dolby Vision. 2018 Sony models are missing from the list (update).

Vudu in 4K Dolby Vision

Vudu offers a fairly wide catalog of movies in 4K HDR quality and has been steadily expanding support to more devices ranging from Smart TVs from LG, Samsung, and Vizio to streaming boxes such as Apple TV 4K, Chromecast Ultra, Roku, and Xbox One.

App version 4.2.52 adds support for 2016-2017 Sony Android TVs. These are now capable of delivering movies from Vudu in up to 4K Dolby Vision quality. If your Sony TV does not support Dolby Vision, you will get the HDR10 version.

- “4K and HDR represent the best possible cinematic experience at home – and we want to be able to deliver that exceptional experience to as many people as possible, across as many devices as possible. So, we’re continuously working to bring Vudu 4K UHD capability to more devices – no matter the platform,” said Kristine Lopes, Sr Manager, Product Marketing.

At this time, Sony 2018 Android TVs do not seem to be supported. The company has not commented on why Sony’s latest TVs are missing from the list. The company maintains a list of compatible devices here. Update: 2018 Sony TVs are also supported, Vudu confirms.

Vudu is owned by Walmart and is a pay-per-view movie service that is competing with Apple iTunes, Google Play Movies, and other online services. Unlike iTunes, Vudu is offering Disney movies in 4K HDR.
