Nintendo has announced that sales of its two retro consoles, NES and Super NES, have surpassed 10 million units. Gamers are clearly obsessed with nostalgia.
Nintendo expects demand to rise
The NES Classic and Super NES Classic are retro game consoles and celebrations of the original consoles that were sold in the eighties and nineties. The retro consoles come with a handful of pre-installed games from the two eras.
After the launch in late 2016, Nintendo has been struggling to keep up with demand. The company now says that worldwide sales have crossed the 10 million mark.
- “Combined global sales of the NES Classic Edition and the Super NES Classic Edition have now surpassed 10 million units,” said Shuntaro Furukawa, president, Nintendo.
Gamers clearly love nostalgia and it turns out that they are willing to pay for retro controls to relive their childhood memories and games such as Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda. Other companies have also jumped on the bandwagon. Sony will soon release the PlayStation Classic.
Nintendo expects even greater demand as we are approaching the holiday season in many regions.
- “The Super NES Classic Edition, released last fall, and the NES Classic Edition, re-released in June of this year, both continue to sell as must-have products, and the fact that they are so affordable suggests that they will be in even greater demand during the holiday season,” said Furukawa.
