LG will introduce an upgraded version of its 'Alpha 9' video processor in the 2019 OLED TVs. The company says that the 2nd-gen version will support “next-generation High Frame Rate (HFR) content” – but the 1st-gen version already does.
2nd-gen Alpha 9 processor
It is not uncommon for TV manufacturers to use the same video processor for a couple of years until a meaningful upgrade is ready. LG has done that in the past. But with the 2018 line-up, the company took big step with the introduction of the Alpha 9 processor in the C8, E8, G8, and W8 OLED TVs.
The 2019 LG OLED TVs will feature an upgraded 2nd-generation Alpha 9 processor, the company teases in a press release. It is not clear what improvements it will offer but LG used the opportunity the highlight HFR – or High Frame Rate – video content in up to 120 frames per second. The 2018 OLED models already support 120fps HFR but it is limited to streaming apps. The big question here is of course if LG will equip its TVs with HDMI 2.1.
- “With the impressive new image processor onboard, 2019 LG OLED TVs will deliver a truly unparalleled viewing experience,” the company said. “The α9 Gen 2 is ready to support next-generation High Frame Rate (HFR) content mastered at an astonishing 120 frames per second (fps). A higher fps means better rendering of fast-paced action with noticeably smoother motion and better image clarity – perfect for watching sports or the latest action blockbusters.”
No other specifics regarding the 2019 OLED models were shared. The rumor mill has been fairly quiet this autumn and it is still unclear if LG.Display – LG’s display production arm – will move to top-emission OLED panels this year. We suspect not as that the company has full focus on ramping up production.
However, we know that LG is planning to launch its first 8K OLED TV (88 inches) next year. The company is also rumored to debut a rollable OLED TV. The 2019 line-up will be unveiled at CES 2019 in January.
