Xbox One to gain DTS:X support for games

28 Jan 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Xbox One will soon gain support DTS:X for games, in addition to Dolby Atmos, according to a report by Forbes. DTS:X will also be supported on Windows PCs.

DTS:X on Xbox One

Xbox One is the first game console to support Dolby Atmos for games and you will soon be able to enjoy games in the competing DTS:X object-based audio format, too. With object-based technology sounds are encoded as objects, rather than fixed channels, and can be placed anywhere in the 3-dimensional space around you for a more immersive experience.

The rumor has been making the rounds for a while – and was referenced in a beta build for Windows last year – but has now been confirmed by Microsoft’s Audio Lead, and discovered by Forbes.

To be clear, DTS:X and Dolby Atmos have been supported via bitstream from the Blu-ray player in Xbox One since April 2017. The new development here is that DTS:X will be supported for Xbox games. DTS:X support is also coming to Windows PCs.

By adding support for DTS:X, Microsoft is further differentiating its console from Sony’s PlayStation 4 that lacks support for many recent video and audio technologies. Over the last few years, Microsoft has added Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision (streaming only), FreeSync, HDMI ALLM, WiSA, and more.

No game titles have been confirmed and DTS:X will roll out to insiders before it will be made available to all users but it is great news that wider support for object-based audio technology is coming to Xbox One soon.
