Apple is in the early stages of developing a subscription service for games, according to a report by Cheddar. It is also considering taking on the role of game publisher.

Sony already has a game streaming service called PlayStation Now. Microsoft, Google, and others are planning to launch similar initiatives sometime in the near future. And Apple is exploring the concept, it seems.
A report by Cheddar, citing five people familiar with the matter, claims that it would function like “Netflix for games”. Users who pay a subscription fee will have access to a library of games.
- ”It’s unclear how much the subscription will cost or what kind of games Apple will offer. The service is still in the early stages of development, and Apple could ultimately decide to abandon it,” the report said.
Apparently, Apple is also considering taking on the role of publisher, meaning that it would partner with game developers and the “assume distribution, marketing, and other related costs for select games”.
Apple declined to comment on the matter.
Such a streaming service would presumably work on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, and possibly other devices, too. At CES 2019, Apple announced that it will partner with LG, Sony, Samsung, and Vizio to bring Airplay 2, HomeKit, and iTunes to TVs. A game streaming service seems like a natural fit for TVs.
Apple already offers subscription services such as Apple Music and iCloud. The company is also planning to launch a video service.
