The Criterion Channel to launch in April on Apple TV, Fire TV & Roku

01 Feb 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

The Criterion Channel will rise from FilmStruck’s ashes and launch on April 8 in the US and Canada. It will offer access to over 1000 classic movies on Apple TV, Fire TV, and Roku for $11 per month.

A collection of classic movies

After AT&T acquired TimeWarner, it decided to shut down FilmStruck, which left many movie buffs frustrated. A large portion of FilmStruck was made up of Criterion’s library and starting in April you will be able to enjoy classic movies on the new Criterion streaming service.

The Criterion Channel will offer access to the entire Criterion streaming library, with access to over 1000 classic and contemporary movies. Titles in the library include Dr. Strangelove, Pan’s Labyrinth, Do the Right Thing, Mulholland Drive, The Seven Samurai, and 12 Angry Men. Subscribers will also have access to a Sunday Spotlight feature, short movies, and more.

- “There’s something new to choose from every day of the week on the Criterion Channel. Start with Sunday Spotlights on directors, stars, genres, and themes; Tuesday’s Short + Feature; or the Friday double bill. Try out our 15-minute-a-month film school, Observations on Film Art, or choose from suggestions by friends like Barry Jenkins, Guillermo del Toro, or Mira Nair. Go deep with the Criterion Collection’s archive of special features for context that no other service can match,” the company said.

It will be available on Apple TV, Fire TV, and Roku as well as Android, iOS, and browsers.

The Criterion Channel will launch on April 8 in the US and Canada and be priced at $11 per month or $100 per year after a free 30-day trial. More information is available on criterionchannel.com.
