Apple is planning to launch a 31.6-inch Pro monitor with 6K resolution and an LCD panel with miniLED backlight that offers ”outstanding picture quality”, according to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via AppleInsider and Macrumors).
Apple Pro monitor
Apple discontinued its last ’Thunderbolt Display’ monitor in 2016 and partnered with LG to launch new monitors. The company later changed its mind and confirmed that it was working on a new monitor to go along with its upcoming Mac Pro.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been very accurate in the past, is claiming that Apple’s Pro monitor will be 31.6 inches in size and feature 6K3K resolution, or around 6144x3456 pixels depending on the aspect ratio. He adds that it will offer "outstanding picture quality thanks to its adoption of the Mini LED-like backlight design".
In this case, "mini LED" refers to the size of the LEDs that make up the backlight unit behind the LCD panel. By employing smaller LEDs, it is possible to achieve more granular control of the backlight. Several companies have shown off prototype miniLED-based LCD panels with over 1000 dimming zones. At CES 2019, Acer unveiled the first mini-LED based LCD monitor.
In the same research note, the analyst outlines Apple's plans for upcoming versions of the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, and AirPods.
Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will launch the upgraded Mac Pro and the 31.6-inch Pro monitor later in 2019.
