Negotiations between Apple and Roku to bring Airplay 2 support to Roku TVs and media players “are nearly finalized”, according to a report by MacRumors.
Airplay 2 in Roku devices
In February 2019, MacRumors claimed that “Roku is in talks with Apple about supporting AirPlay 2”. Yesterday, they followed up with a new report claiming that “negotiations are nearly finalized”, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter.
The report says that AirPlay 2 will be supported on Roku TVs from brands such as TCL, Sharp, Hisense, Hitachi, Sanyo, and RCA as well as Roku media boxes. However, it is unclear if all Roku models will receive support for Apple’s protocol that allows users to wirelessly transfer video, photos, and music from an iOS device to the TV screen, in addition to letting devices with Airplay 2 enter into a multi-room music system.
In a statement Roku said that "we don't have anything to share regarding this now”.
Google has a protocol named Chromecast that offers some of the same features. Roku does not support Chromecast.
Apple TV already supports Airplay 2. Support is also coming to select TVs from LG, Sony, Samsung, and Vizio later this year.
