Apple will release its revamped ’TV’ app, which will also become the home to the company’s upcoming streaming service, not only for the current Apple TV boxes with tvOS but also the 3rd-gen Apple TV, according to a report by MacRumors.
It is still alive
The third-generation Apple TV – the small black box without tvOS – was launched in March 2012 and discontinued in September 2016. However, Apple is still bringing out new features from time to time.
The revamped ’TV’ app that was unveiled at the company’s big event earlier this week is also coming to the discontinued hardware. The company confirmed the news with beta software update 7.3.

Besides acting as a modern TV guide and a place where you can subscribe to partner video apps, the ’TV’ app will become the home to the company’s upcoming streaming service Apple TV+. It seems very likely that the streaming service will also be available on the 3rd-gen Apple TV through the new ’TV’ app. However, this has not been confirmed by the company.
Apple’s revamped ’TV’ app will launch in May on Apple’s devices – on Mac this fall. It will also be available on Samsung Smart TVs this spring, and later on LG TVs, Sony TVs, Roku, FireTV, and Vizio TVs.
