Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, one of the greatest horror films ever made, will be re-released in 4K HDR on UHD Blu-ray and streaming this October.
Here's Johnny
Warner Bros has announced that Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, based on Stephen King's novel and starring Jack Nicholson in his iconic lead role, will be re-released based on a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative.
The restored 4K version of the film will also be presented in High Dynamic Range with a wider color space and an expanded luminance range "for a home entertainment viewing experience like never before". Steven Spielberg and Kubrick's former personal assistant Leon Vitali oversaw the remastering.
The Shining is heading to UHD Blu-ray and will also be released for streaming in 4K HDR. Warner Bros confirms that it will be available on "Google Play, Vudu, Xbox, and others", which presumably includes iTunes.

There is some confusing over the runtime. Warner Bros says that the "4K remastering is of Kubrick’s original 146 minute version of the film which premiered in the United States on May 23rd, 1980" but specifications state that it has a runtime of 144 minutes. This suggests that the hospital epilogue scene, which was cut just a few days after release, remains lost.
Hollywood studios are busy remastering classic movies in 4K HDR these years. Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey has already been re-released in 4K HDR and Dr. Strangelove has been restored in 4K for theatrical release, although no announcement regarding a home release has been made.
The Shining premiered in 1980 and Johnny will return almost 40 years later on October 1, 2019. The UHD Blu-ray combo pack will cost $42 dollars.
