Sony demonstrates PS5 vs. PS4 Pro game load times

At an investor meeting, Sony demonstrated just how fast 'PlayStation 5' load times are compared to PlayStation 4 Pro. The company also outlined its vision for the future of game streaming.

PlayStation 5 is fast. Very fast
Sony recently revealed key specifications for its next-generation game console, likely to be named PlayStation 5. At an investor meeting, Sony reiterated that the new console will support 8K, 3D Audio, and ray tracing. It will also have a disc drive.



Perhaps more importantly, Sony demonstrated just how fast PlayStation 5 (and its SSD) will be in terms of game load times. In this particular example (Marvel's Spider-Man), PlayStation 5 loaded the game in less than 1 second while it took PS4 Pro more than 8 seconds, as seen in the video below. The video also shows how fast a game world can be rendered, if required.

Sony's vision for game streaming
In addition, Sony outlined its vision for game streaming. PlayStation Now currently has 700,000 subscribers but Sony expects that number to grow in the coming years as it adds support for more devices and next-generation games. PS Now will get "support for 1080p and beyond".

- "Our Vision: A massively enhanced PlayStation community where enriched and shared PlayStation experiences can be seamlessly enjoyed independent of time and place – with or without a console," one of the presentation slides says.

Sony furthermore offers the 'PS4 Remote Play' app, which is currently being used actively by 5.6 million users across PC/Mac, Android, and iOS, according to the company's own numbers.



Sony also used to opportunity to highlight its new partnership with Microsoft to develop game streaming technology.

The company believes that backwards compatibility with PlayStation 4 games will help "transition our community to Next Gen faster and more seamlessly than ever before".

Sony has yet to announce a launch date but many expect PlayStation 5 to debut in the second half of 2020.
