Apple AirPlay 2 is increasingly being embedded into other companies' multiroom platforms. The next step after Sonos is that DTS Play-Fi products will gain AirPlay 2 support.
AirPlay 2 in DTS Play-Fi
Xperi, the company behind DTS, launched DTS Play-Fi as a wireless platform for multiroom audio in the home. In February 2018, it raised the stakes by adding support for TV audio on top of music.
The company is now partnering with Apple to integrate AirPlay 2 into select DTS Play-Fi products. At launch, it will be available for McIntosh RS200 as well as Arcam rPlay, which is small box that brings multiroom features to external speakers. With AirPlay 2, it could serve as an alternative for Apple's discontinued AirPort Express.
The company added that additional DTS Play-Fi products will gain AirPlay 2 support later this year. These products were not identified but the ecosystem comprises soundbars and many other types of audio products.
- "We are thrilled to bring AirPlay 2 into the DTS Play-Fi experience," said Dannie Lau, general manager, DTS Play-Fi. "With this new ability, our partners can better service Apple users with a feature set that meets their expectations for interoperability with the products they love."

With AirPlay 2 you can transmit TV audio from Apple TV wirelessly to compatible speakers and receivers. You can also stream music from iPhone, iPad, and Mac to multiple AirPlay 2 compatible speakers at once. In the announcement, it was highlighted that users can use Siri on HomePod or other Apple devices to request music on compatible DTS Play-Fi products.
Arcam rPlay
- "AirPlay 2 brings multi-room music playback to the Apple ecosystem," said Nicholas Clarke, senior director, Harman. "Combining AirPlay 2 with DTS Play-Fi gives Arcam rPlay customers even more ways to access their product while providing the hi-res streaming audio support they demand."
AirPlay 2 is now available for McIntosh RS200 and Arcam rPlay. Additional products will be announced later.
