With the release of macOS Catalina this fall, Apple is bringing support for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos to the 'TV' app on Macs from 2018 or later.
4K HDR on Apple Mac
Later this year, Apple will release the next major version of its Mac operating system - macOS Catalina - which includes the new 'TV' app that was launched last month for Apple TV and iOS.
The new 'TV' app on Mac will support movies from iTunes in up to 4K HDR picture quality and Dolby Atmos audio. The announcement was made at WWDC 2019.
- "The Apple TV app for Mac is the new home for all your favorite movies, shows, premium channels, and — coming soon — Apple TV+. Watch everything directly in the app while you discover the best of what’s on in the Watch Now tab. You can even pick up where you left off on any screen, across all your devices. And for the first time, 4K and Dolby Atmos–supported movies are available on Mac," the company said.
Apple says that "4K, 4K HDR, 4K Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and HDR10 content is available on all Mac models introduced in 2018 or later with 4K-resolution screens".
As for Dolby Atmos, this will be "available on Mac notebooks introduced in 2018 or later".
This fall, Apple will launch its TV+ video subscription service that will be accessible from within the new 'TV' app. However, the company has not said if its new original movies and TV series will be available in 4K HDR and Atmos.
macOS Catalina will be available this fall as a free software update.
