As announced earlier this year, Amazon and Google will start collaborating again. Today, Amazon Prime Video launches on Chromecast and YouTube is back on Amazon Fire TV devices.
Amazon & Google make amends
As part of a multi-year corporate fight, the two companies have been limiting support for competing products in a number of ways. Google's YouTube has been blocked on Amazon devices, while Amazon Prime Video has been unavailable on many Android devices.
Starting today, Amazon Prime Video for Android and iOS will work with Chromecast devices following a software update. In addition, the Amazon Prime Video app that has been available on a few Android TV devices (such as Sony TVs and Nvidia Shield) will be widely available on Android TVs from various brands, the companies said, with rollout starting today.
Also starting today, YouTube will return to Amazon Fire TV devices, including the Stick 4K, Cube, and Stick Basic Edition along with Smart TVs based on the Fire TV platform. More Fire TV devices will be getting the YouTube app in the coming months, according to Amazon. The YouTube app also works with Alexa voice commands. In addition, YouTube Kids and YouTube TV apps will launch on the Fire TV platform later this year.
- "Plus, you can play compatible videos (from YouTube) in 4K HDR at 60 fps on supported TVs and streaming media players," Amazon said.
Amazon's Echo Show is not included as a supported device and it is unclear if YouTube will be made available on this device.
