PS4 reaches 100m milestone, game downloads overtake discs

PlayStation 4 reached the 100 million milestone by the end of the second quarter of 2019, Sony revealed in its earnings report. This makes PlayStation 4 the "fastest home console to reach 100 million units", according to Daniel Ahmad, analyst at Niko Partners. It has reached 100 million sales slightly faster than both PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii. It has taken a little under 6 years.In terms of unit sales PlayStation 4 is far ahead of Microsoft's Xbox One, which is estimated to have sold 40-45 million units since launch, depending on who you ask. Microsoft stopped disclosing unit sales data for Xbox One after it fell behind Sony not long after the launch of both consoles.This makes PlayStation 4 the fastest home console to reach 100 million unit sell in.

Sony also noted that PlayStation 4 game download sales have overtaken physical discs for the first time. During the last quarter, game downloads represented 53% of sales. The company is gearing up to launch its next-generation game console. "PlayStation 5" will offer 8K graphics, 4K120, 3D audio, ray-tracing, backwards compatibility, and more.
