Asus announces first LCD & OLED PC monitors with Dolby Vision

First unveiled at CES, Asus has partnered with Dolby to make its 32-inch PA32UCX (LCD) and 22-inch PQ22UC (OLED) the first consumer PC monitors with Dolby Vision.

Film studios use advanced - and very expensive - monitors for HDR grading but in the consumer PC space HDR has been mostly a mirage. That will begin to change later this year with the release of less expensive - but still not exactly affordable - monitors from Apple and Asus.

Asus' two LCD and OLED PC monitors will be the first to support Dolby Vision, besides HDR10 and HLG. The 32-inch PA32UCX (LCD) and 22-inch PQ22UC (OLED) were unveiled (1, 2) at CES 2019 and CES 2018, respectively, but without support for Dolby Vision. In the meantime, the two companies have partnered to make it happen.

Asus PA32UCX and PQ22UC 
The 32-inch Asus PA32UCX has a 4K LCD panel with miniLED backlight and 1152 local dimming zones, capable of hitting 1200 nits peak brightness. The company says that it uses a quantum dot film to achieve 99% DCI-P3 and 89% Rec.2020 color gamut coverage.



PA32UCX has been factory calibrated to dE less than 1. It is equipped with HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2, and Thunderbolt 3 USB-C. The monitor is aimed at videographers, cinematographers, and colorists.

The 22-inch PQ22UC has a 4K OLED panel with pixel-level luminance control. Asus explains that it uses RGB-stripe OLED rather than 'white OLED' as found in OLED TVs. While RGB OLED technically allows an OLED screen to deliver more saturated colors at higher brightness levels (compared to white OLED), this monitor has a peak brightness of just 330 nits. The panel is produced by JOLED, a joint venture between Japan Display, Sony, and Panasonic.



PQ22UC offers true black, 99% DCI-P3 color coverage, and 0.1 ms response time, making it "the fastest monitor in the market", according to the company. However, signal input is limited to 60Hz. It has been factory calibrated to dE less than 2. It has been designed as a portable monitor for photographers, video editors and content creators on the go.

The Asus PQ22UC started shipping in limited quantities a couple of months ago for around $4000-4500. Asus had originally planned to launch PA32UCX in spring 2019 but now expects it to be available later this year. It will cost around $4000, according to pre-order pages.
