New 'The Matrix' movie confirmed

The genre-defining movie trilogy will get a fourth chapter. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Neo and Trinity in The Matrix 4, Warner Bros has confirmed.

20 years after
The movie trilogy grossed more than $1.6 billion at the global box office but it is not just a story of financial success. The Matrix was a groundbreaking movie that defined a genre. 

The Matrix was released in 1999 and was followed up by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003 and The Matrix Revolutions later that same year. Ever since, rumors about a fourth movie have circulated. Warner Bros has now confirmed that it will happen.

The Matrix 4 will be written, directed, and produced by Lana Wachowski, one of the two creators of the original movies.

- "We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana," said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. "Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe."



Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

- "Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," said Lana Wachowski. "I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Warner Bros recently rereleased The Matrix in some cinemas in the US to celebrate the 20th anniversary. The three movies were also released in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on UHD Blu-ray and online. The Matrix Revolutions was the first movie in the history of cinema to release simultaneously in all major regions at the same time.

The release date for The Matrix 4 was not announced.
