The market for 8K TVs is not ready but as soon as it matures Philips will participate. The company is developing 8K technology and behind closed doors at IFA it demonstrated its work on 8K OLED.
Philips 8K OLED
Earlier this year at its launch event in Amsterdam, TP Vision's "never beaten" showcase was meant to demonstrate how a Philips 4K OLED TV had never been beaten as compared to Samsung's 8K TVs.
At IFA 2019, Danny Tack, the company's picture quality guru and director of product planning, once again emphasized that it is early days for 8K and that he prefers to wait. A message that other TV makers, including Panasonic, have been echoing.
However, as soon as the 8K market matures Philips will be ready to participate. Danny Tack underscored his point by demonstrating a 88-inch 8K OLED TV powered by the latest generation of Philips' P5 video processor, which is already capable of processing 8K video. The company will of course also need to equip its TVs with HDMI 2.1 chipsets - something that LG has exclusively this year.

The panel is sourced from LG Display and as a partner in the OLED space Philips has early access. LG Electronics will be charging around 30000 Euro for the first 88-inch 8K OLED TV so it is probably not a bad idea to skip the first round.

When does Philips anticipate that the 8K market will be ready? The company may decide to launch its 8K OLED TV next year but Danny Tack cautioned that plans could change.
