LG releases HomeKit & AirPlay 2 firmware for UM7 series TVs

LG started rolling out AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for its high-end 2019 TVs in July. The firmware is now also available for the cheaper UM7 series TVs, and will arrive later for low-end UM6 models (via Macrumors).

Like Samsung, Sony, and Vizio, LG has partnered with Apple to bring AirPlay 2 to its TVs. The latter three will also support Apple HomeKit.

LG started rolling out the required firmware to its 2019 OLED models as well as most of its "NanoCell" LCD TVs in late July 2019. The firmware (version 04.70.03) is now also rolling out to LG's mid-range UM7 series TVs such as UM7600, UM7500, and UM7100.

In addition, Apple and LG confirm that LG's low-end UM6 series TVs will also receive the firmware later this year. The same goes for LG's "SM83 series and below" in the "NanoCell" range. It would appear that more or less LG's entire 2019 line-up of 4K and 8K TVs will be compatible. However, the company still reserves AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for its 2019 TVs.



AirPlay works natively in almost any iOS app - unless the app developer has deactivated the feature, like Netflix - and as such it brings a wealth of new streaming content to LG TVs that lack apps for many second-tier streaming service.

HomeKit is Apple's platform for the connected home. It allows you to control certain aspects of your LG TV, including "basic TV functions such as power, volume and source", via an iPhone or iPad, or through voice commands to Siri via an iPhone/iPad or HomePod.

Samsung and Vizio have also released the required firmware, while Sony has yet to release its update.
