Hold on to your Apple TV 4K hardware. The Apple TV app is supported only on recent Fire TV devices and it lacks support for Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, iTunes purchases, and AirPlay 2.

The Apple TV app arrived on Roku last week and is now available on Amazon's Fire TV devices. However, the version for Fire TV has even more limitations than the Roku implementation. - "Starting today, Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K customers all around the world can download and begin using the all-new Apple TV app," Amazon announced. The Apple TV app is compatible with Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K in the US, Canada, Uk, Germany, France, Italy, Span, and India as well as Fire TV Basic Edition in over 50 countries. It is coming soon to Fire TV Cube and Fire TV (3rd Gen) as well as Fire TVs from Toshiba and Insigina. It will not be compatible with the millions of Fire TV (1st and 2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick (1st Gen) devices out there, the company said.

Besides Apple TV+ content starting November 1, the app brings the iTunes movie library to Fire TV. The app also supports 'channels', meaning Apple's partners such as HBO and Showtime that let you subscribe from within the app. The app for Fire TV supports up to 4K HDR10 but like Roku there is no support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Furthermore, you cannot rent or buy movies from within the app. You have to do that from another separate device. Amazon says that some Alexa voice commands are supported. You can open the app and you can search for particular shows on Apple TV+. Like Roku, Fire TV devices lacks support for AirPlay 2, which is supported on other partner devices such as 2018 and 2019 Samsung TVs and 2019 LG TVs. Samsung TVs also feature the Apple TV app. The app is coming later to select LG, Sony, and Vizio TVs. The fully featured version of the Apple TV app can be found on the Apple TV 4K box and if you are invested in the ecosystem we suggest that you hold on to your Apple TV 4K hardware for now. - Source: Amazon, Apple
