Apple TV app starts rolling out to Sony TVs
Sony has yet to announce details but TV owners are starting to receive the Apple TV app ahead of the scheduled launch of Apple TV+ on Friday (via 9to5Mac). Update: Sony says that the app is not officially available at this time. It has nothing to announce yet.Apple TV app on Sony TVs
The Apple TV app launched on 2018 and 2019 Samsung TVs in spring and recently came to some Roku and FireTV devices. Apple has confirmed that it will also come to select LG, Sony, and Vizio TVs. The app is required to access Apple's new streaming service. In addition to Apple TV+ content, it will include 4K HDR movies from iTunes as well as content from partners such as HBO and Showtime. Sony TV owners in some regions, including Brazil, are saying that the app is now available. Sony has yet to announce details or even confirm what TVs are supported. We assume that at least Sony's X850G (XG85), X950G (XG95), A9G (AG9) and Z9G (ZG9) from the 2019 line-up will get it, as these models will be getting AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, according to the company.It is unclear if a firmware update is required or if the Apple TV app will appear automatically. So far, there are no new firmware updates available in the US or Europe. It is worth noting that although Sony's TV run on Google's Android TV platform, Apple has no official plans to make the app widely available on Android TV, which also powers TVs from TCL (Europe), Philips, and Hisense as well as media players such as Nvidia Shield. Besides official apps from the Google Play store, apps can be sideloaded or loaded via Sony's legacy platform.
