In February 2019, BBC and ITV announced plans to launch BritBox, a unified front against Amazon and Netflix in the UK. Channel 4 and Channel 5 have come onboard and the service is now live in the UK for £6 per month. BritBox includes content from its participating broadcasters such as Downton Abbey, Top Gear, Lambs of God, Gavin & Stacey, Wolf Hall, Love Island and Broadchurch, Doctor Who, Cracker, Prime Suspect, Brideshead Revisited, Ashes to Ashes, Absolutely Fabulous, Extras, Blackadder and Fawlty Towers. "It's got the widest range of UK box sets of any service," said Reemah Sakaan, ITV's group director for streaming. "Ostensibly the other streamers are US-focused so they make dramas for the US market, whereas BritBox is the faces, people and places that you know."Some archive programs that were available on competing services will move to BritBox in the future, the companies said. Shows from Channel 4, Film4, and Comedy Central UK will be added in 2020. BritBox is ad-free and available via apps for Apple TV and Samsung TVs as well as iOS, Android, and the web. It lacks support for many other popular TV platforms that are already supported by competing services. BritBox launched in the US two years ago and currently has 650,000 subscribers.
