Asus announces first 360Hz monitor and 1152-zone miniLED LCD gaming monitor
At CES 2020, Asus announced the first monitor with 360Hz refresh rate, although limited to Full HD resolution. It also unveiled a 1152-zone miniLED-based LCD gaming monitor. Both will be available this year.First 360Hz monitor
The 24.5-inch monitor is part of Asus' ROG (Republic of Gamers) series. It is the first of its kind and it even supports 360Hz with Nvidia G-Sync. Today's fastest gaming monitors are typically 240Hz or 144Hz, depending on resolution. - "Compared to widely available 240Hz gaming monitors, the ROG Swift 360Hz can put out a whopping 50 percent more frames every second – supplying esports and competitive gamers with the edge they need to win. With a comfortable 24.5-inch display size and Full HD resolution, the ROG Swift 360Hz features the same unmistakable design that graces the lineup of highest-end ROG gaming monitors," said Asus. Asus said that its unnamed 360Hz monitor will be available later this year. Additional technical and pricing details will be announced later.
Asus miniLED LCD gaming monitor
Asus also announced the 32-inch PG32UQX, which is a gaming LCD monitor that utilizes a miniLED backlight with zone dimming. It has 4K resolution, supports 144Hz refresh rate, and is certified for G-Sync Ultimate. Asus says that it has 1152 dimming zones and claims that it can hit up to 1400 nits brightness. It is also certified for DisplayHDR 1400.- "Small highlights in games, like light bulbs or the disc of the sun, can reach peak brightness of up to 1400 nits, offering a more lifelike HDR experience than ever before. The Mini-LED backlight can also turn off as needed when it comes to darker scenes," the company proclaimed. The upcoming 32-inch PG32UQX gaming monitor appears to use the same miniLED-based LCD panel as the 32-inch PA32UCX that was announced earlier as a professional monitor for working with color and video. FlatpanelsHD spotted the $4000+ PA32UCX at IFA 2019 back in September and it left us unimpressed as it suffered from mediocre contrast, subdued highlights, and visible blooming even in a brightly lit environment. We would be surprised if the brightness of the stars in the first photo below exceeded 200 nits.
It is certainly a step in the right direction for HDR on PC monitors compared to edge-lit LCD monitors but it needs further improvement to deliver decent HDR. These advanced backlight technologies are also unlikely to start appearing in affordable monitors due to very high costs. The 32-inch PG32UQX will be available later this year. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
