HBO is turning 'The Last of Us' into a TV series

One of HBO's next major projects will be a TV series adaptation of one of the best console games in history, The Last of Us. Writer and creator of the game is involved in the project.

Sony and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us was released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and later remastered for PlayStation 4. It is considered one of the best console games in history and it became one of best-selling console games with 17 million copies sold.

If you have not played the game you have certainly missed out but sometime in the near future you will be able to experience the post-apocalyptic tale centering on the relationship between Joel and Ellie in a world hit by a deadly pandemic as a TV series instead.

HBO has confirmed that Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of the original PlayStation game, will be involved in the new TV series that will cover the events of the original game and possibly also the sequel The Last of Us Part II, which will be released for PlayStation 4 on May 29.

- "Look for the light. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann to develop the series adaptation of The Last of Us, coming soon to HBO," said HBO.



Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO's Chernobyl, will also be involved. As will Sony Pictures Television.

- "We’re so psyched to be teaming up with HBO to create a new The Last of Us series with Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin at the helm," said Naughty Dog.

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us is just the latest example of a popular game franchise to be turned into a series or movie. Similarly, Naughty Dog's Uncharted game is being turned into a movie, although it has been delayed numerous times. Not many movie adaptations of video games have proven succesful but this one has potential. The biggest risk here is that HBO will drag it down by offering it in its usual abysmal picture and quality.

HBO did not confirm the premiere date.
