HBO to end app support for pre-tvOS Apple TV boxes

13 Apr 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

HBO is ending support for 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TV boxes. However, you will still be able to enjoy HBO via AirPlay or the Apple TV app.

HBO apps will stop working

HBO will end support for Apple TV2 that was launched in 2010 and Apple TV3 that was launched in 2012. Both Apple TV boxes were introduced before the company launched its TV operating system, tvOS. The HBO Now app will stop working after May 15, 2020, while the HBO Go app will continue to work a few more months. - "We are always working with distribution partners to add new devices and retire devices when needed to make sure we’re providing the best streaming experience possible," the company said in a statement to Engadget.

However, you can still use HBO Now and HBO Go on both streaming boxes via AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad. In addition, HBO Now is available as a partner channel via the Apple TV app on the 3rd generation Apple TV box. The HBO Now and HBO Go apps will continue to work on tvOS-based devices (Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K). HBO did not comment on the technical reasons but the move comes as it prepares to launch its new HBO Max streaming service. - Source: HBO via Engadget
