Netflix Recommended TVs must now be optimized for interactive content

The company has adjusted the criteria for its 'Netflix Recommended TV' program to include an evaluation of a TV's support for interactive content.

Netflix introduced its certification program for TVs in 2015 as a way to help push the TV app experience forward, and in 2019 it introduced a new 'always fresh' criterion, meaning that "while the TV is sleeping, Netflix is still awake". In 2020, Netflix has again adjusted the criteria to cover the level of support for interactive content in a given TV. - "For the first time, we have added new criteria that determines if a TV provides a superior experience for interactive content. Interactive shows and movies unlock a whole new level of engagement - giving our members the ability to participate and choose the direction of the story they are watching. And when it comes to making a choice and seeing what happens next - speed is everything," said Brady Gunderson, Product Management, Netflix. Netflix currently offers the following TV series and movies as interactive titles:
  • Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale
  • Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile
  • Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout
  • Minecraft: Story Mode
  • Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
  • Bear Grylls' You vs. Wild
  • Captain Underpants Epic Choice-O-Rama
  • Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend

In order to receive the designation, the TV must meet 5 out of 7 criteria listed here. Netflix said that it tests all TVs that carry the Netflix app. Devices that do no support interactive content from Netflix currently include Apple TV, Chromecast, Windows PCs and tablets with the Netflix app, Tesla touch screen displays, and browsers using Silverlight. At this time, Netflix recommends 2020 TVs from Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony. Additional TV brands may be added to the list later this year.
