Microsoft and Sony say that next-gen consoles will support 4K at up to 120fps and 8K output. We are counting and after several game showcases we have spotted only one 4K120 game.
So, about 4K120
Last month, Sony revealed the first 27 games for PS5 and yesterday Microsoft revealed 22 exclusive games for Xbox Series X. There are many promising games; from Horizon Forbidden West and Assassin's Creed Valhalla to Halo Infinite and Forza Motorsport.
Console makers and studios are throwing around fancy terms such as "4K Ultra HD", "flawless 60fps", and "beautiful shadow effects and ray tracing". Some of these games will look amazing. No doubt about that.
But it is not 4K120 (4K at 120 frames per second) and there has been almost no mention of variable frame rate support for the next-gen games that have been unveiled so far. A VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) compatible TV will allow gamers to enjoy variable frame rates between 60fps and 120fps for smoother gameplay with more details in motion and less lag.
Why are we bringing this up? Let us jump back a chapter. In two interviews (1, 2) in spring 2019, Sony highlighted support for 4K120 and 8K. In June 2019 at E3, Microsoft told the world that its next-gen Xbox would support up to 8K graphics and up to 120fps for 4K.
Cool.
Obviously no one had expected these consoles to deliver consistent 4K120 performance in AAA games when even powerful PCs struggle to go beyond 4K 60fps, but we had hoped that at least a handful of games would take advantage of it. Why else highlight it? Besides SSD and ray-tracing, 4K120 (+ VRR) is still one of the most talked about elements of next-gen consoles.
One (current-gen) game
We are counting and so far we have spotted only game with confirmed 4K120 support. It is a good and beautiful game. We know that because it is an Xbox One title that will now be optimized for Xbox Series X. It is Ori and the Will of the Wisps – hardly an AAA title.
120fps support was also highlighted for Dirt 5 but not at 4K resolution. Of course, Xbox One X already supports 120fps games (at 1080p or 1440p).
We expect more games with support for 4K120 to emerge later but Sony, Microsoft and partners have already revealed many of the biggest next-gen titles that will be available at launch or sometime after. 'Overpromise, underdeliver' has never been a good approach and it is probably time that we all adjust our expectations.
And 8K? There are multiple factors to consider but roughly speaking 4K120 equals 8K30 in terms of bandwidth (7680×4320×30 = 3840×2160×120 = 995,328,000). 8K60? Double. Keep dreaming.
