Apple eyes more blockbuster movies after 'Greyhound' success

06 Aug 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

Greyhound has reportedly been a big hit for Apple TV+ and the company is now looking to increase investments in blockbuster movies, according to a report by Fast Company.

Apple in Hollywood

Greyhound has attracted an "audience commensurate with a summer theatrical box office big hit", according to Deadline's sources who also claim that 30% of viewers are new to Apple TV+. The movie is being characterized as a big hit for the streaming newcomer who is investing billions of dollars to take on more established players such as Netflix. After passing the litmus test, Apple's ambitions in movies "are now being amped up to (almost) Netflix-like levels", according to Fast Company's sources. Apple is apparently telling partners that it is planning to debut a new movie every month, of which "two to four would be blockbuster-type titles" in line with Greyhound. Is that a lot? In Disney's record year 2019 it premiered 14 movies in theaters if you include titles such as Ford v. Ferrari and Ad Astra from 20th Century Fox, which Disney has acquired.

Confirmed titles

A handful of movies have been confirmed, including action movie Emancipation starring Will Smith, A Christmas Carol starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, Snow Blind starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Palmer starring Justin Timberlake, and On the Rocks starring Bill Murray. We also know that Apple has signed a multiyear deal with studio A24, which is known for the Oscar-winning Moonlight as well as Ex Machina. But we have yet to learn the exact scope of the company's ambitions and we do not know how many subscribers Apple TV+ has. Nevertheless, Apple is emerging as a major player in Hollywood.
