'Mulan' to skip theaters and premiere on Disney+ in September

Mulan was supposed to mark the grand re-opening of theaters across the world together with Warner Bros' Tenet. First in July, then in August. Disney has now confirmed that Mulan, which has a production budget of around $200 million, will skip theaters and head straight to Disney+ in many regions. The news was announced during an earnings call. Mulan will premiere on Disney+ on September 4, 2020 as a $30 PVOD (premium video-on-demand) title. It will not be included as part of the normal subscription plan. It is not clear if non-subscribers will be able to rent the movie.Disney CEO Bob Chapek noted that the company will evaluate release plans on a title by title basis, and that Mulan does not represent a new normal. So far, Artemis Fowl, Hamilton, The One and Only Ivan, Magic Camp and now Mulan have shifted to Disney+ but the company still has many major movies planned for theatrical release. The movie will be released in theaters only in markets where Disney+ is not yet available. During the earnings call, it was also announced that Disney+ has surpassed 60 million subscribers less than a year after launch in November 2019 and the subsequent expansion to a handful of new region. Disney+ will launch in additional regions later this year.
