'Nintendo Switch Pro' with 4K support rumored for 2021

25 Aug 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

An upgraded, more powerful 'Nintendo Switch Pro' game console with support for 4K resolution will launch next year, according to Bloomberg.

Nintendo Switch Pro

After the Wii U fiasco, Nintendo launched the Switch, which has proven very popular. The company had sold more than 61 million Switch consoles as of June 2020. This compares to 102 million Wii and 154 million DS consoles. Bloomberg reports that Nintendo is planning to launch an upgraded model of the Switch console next year "along with a lineup of new games" for both casual and more discerning gamers. The new console will likely include "more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics", according to the sources.

Nintendo Switch Pro

Rumors about a 'Nintendo Switch Pro' have circulated for a while. Unlike the new PlayStation and Xbox consoles that are based on x86 processor architecture, Nintendo's Switch consoles are based on ARM processor architecture, specifically a lower clocked version of the Nvidia Tegra chip also found in Nvidia Shield. Apple's TV box is also based on ARM architecture. Also read: Apple TV's path to becoming a real game console Can Switch deliver 4K graphics with an ARM chip? That remains to be seen but it will require a very significant upgrade over the current Tegra chip, and even then it is unlikely to deliver 4K graphics for the type of AAA games that you typically find on PlayStation and Xbox. Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and others have enjoyed high demand for game consoles and games during the coronavirus pandemic as many people remain indoors. Next-gen game consoles and games could give the industry a further boost. - Source: Bloomberg
