Nvidia's latest software update (version 8.2) brings improvements to the 'AI' upscaling and remote control. It also introduces 'match frame rate' support on the 2015 and 2017 models.

Shield update 8.2

The first Nvidia Shield TV box launched in May 2015 and Nvidia has steadily been adding new features through software updates. This is the 25th update, the company noted. With the update, "earlier SHIELD generations – both 2015 and 2017 models – now have an option to match the frame rate of displayed content". It means that Nvidia Shield owners will finally be able to enjoy content in the frame rate that it was created, without judder and related issues. However, the 'match frame rate' option remains manual and has limitations as discussed in our in-depth Nvidia Shield 2019 review. The update also improves Nvidia's 'AI' upscaling system with support for 60fps for live sports as well as YouTube. In the weeks ahead, GeForce Now will be updated to support 4K 60fps upscaling (not native). However, 60fps upscaling will only be supported on the 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro.

In addition, Nvidia has improved IR and CEC volume control support. - "These upgrades include support for digital projectors, and allowing functionality when SHIELD isn’t active. It also adds IR volume control when using the SHIELD TV app, and when you’ve paired your Google Home with SHIELD. The 2019 SHIELD remote adds IR control to change the input source on TVs, AVRs and soundbars," the company explained.
