Philips unveils 48-65" OLED935 with 4K, B&W speakers & Ambilight 4

Philips Europe has today unveiled a new flagship OLED TV with 4K resolution, multi-HDR support and B&W speakers. OLED935 also marks the launch of the company's first 48-inch OLED.

A new flagship OLED TV
OLED935 is the most advanced Philips TV to date. To drive home the message, the company pointed to its new 'AI' P5 video processor that uses a neural network to enhance the picture – a form of adaptive 'Vivid' mode. If you prefer to follow Hollywood's guidelines, OLED935 is the first Philips TV to support Filmmaker Mode.

It is the first Philips OLED TV to be made available in 48 inches. Like LG and Sony's models, this is a no-compromise 48-inch OLED TV with the same advanced picture and audio features found in the larger 55- and 65-inch OLED935 models.



It also marks the return of 4-sided Ambilight. It is certainly not the first Philips TV capable of projecting mood lighting on all four sides of the picture but the company has been using the 4-sided version on-and-off over the years, more often favoring the 3-sided variant due to the TVs' table-top stands. With OLED935, the speaker system has been designed in a way that allows Ambilight to reach all four sides.

Ambilight can be extended to the living room via Philips Hue lighting and via the company's new soundbars.



B&W speakers with Atmos
Another headlining feature is a 3.1.2-channel 70W speaker system designed by Bowers & Wilkins. It has a central tweeter unit to ensure clear dialog as well as upward-firing speakers for Dolby Atmos overhead effects.

Another new audio feature is DTS Play-Fi support. Play-Fi is a wireless audio platform that lets you connect compatible speakers wirelessly for up to 5.1 surround sound. DTS Play-Fi is also a multiroom system for music.



Android inside
Like previous Philips OLED TVs, OLED935 features 4K resolution and multi-HDR support (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision). It comes bundled with the company's new remote control wrapped in leather and with backlit buttons.

It is powered by Google's Android TV platform and a MediaTek SoC with 16GB of storage, although some of it is reserved for the system. Being an Android TV you can download apps and games from the Google Play store. You can also push content wirelessly from a mobile device onto the screen via built-in Chromecast, or use voice commands to control the TV and find new content. And unlike many competing Smart TV platforms, Android TV is actually getting regular, albeit delayed, software updates.

What OLED935 does not offer is HDMI 2.1. Save for a single optional HDMI 2.1 feature in the form of ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), which can automatically switch the TV into Game Mode when a game is detected, there are no HDMI 2.1 ports or features. Buyers who are planning to invest in a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X console may consider the lack of HDMI 2.1 and VRR as limitations. For movie buffs, it should not be a concern at this time.

On the other hand, Philips has developed a new anti burn-in system to reduce the risk during lengthy gaming sessions.

- "The new Intelligent Dual Engine version of the processing suit also has the additional power to offer a unique anti-burn-in solution that uses an advanced logo detection function to monitor a grid of 32,400 zones, to very accurately detect static content and gradually reduce the intensity of its local light output and avoid burn‐in – and without compromising the output of other parts of the screen," the company said. "Philips TV’s new system removes the anti-burn problem for 95% of static images, including logos and gaming content."

What else? Well, design. The company likes to emphasize its European roots and that it uses quality materials in its TV designs rather than plastics made to look like other materials. It is a premium TV with a premium feel; metal, fabric, leather.

OLED935 is a new flagship model that will compete with high-end OLED TVs from competing brands. The competition includes LG's 'Gallery' GX model with its slim profile, Panasonic's HZ2000 with it customized, brighter OLED panel, and other TV models.

Philips OLED935 will be available in Europe in 48 (October), 55, and 65 inches known as 48OLED935, 55OLED935, and 65OLED935. Prices will start at around 2200 Euro, depending on your country. Further information can be found in the table below.

Filmmaker Mode, Pure & Movie - FAQ

Philips TV continues to be one of very few manufacturers to offer support for all of the current HDR formats with the new enhanced P5 AI processor offering better overall HDR performance including for HLG and both HDR10 & HDR10+ sources while also improving Dolby Vision encoded dynamic HDR content using the special “Dolby Bright mode”.

The 4th Gen P5 processor can also accurately follow and map the Maximum Content Light Level (MAX CLL) in the HDR10 metadata through the full range from 1000nits to 4000nits.

The new software also includes Film Maker Mode (FMM) which will automatically detect encoded content and will offer the viewer the option to select the mode or leave the set with its current settings.

Philips TV has also included the option of two new motion modes – Pure Cinema mode and a new version of Movie mode.

Pure Cinema mode disables frame-rate conversion while keeping frame re‐ordering active. So, a 24p movie encapsulated as a 3:2 cadence 60Hz signal will be re‐ordered into a 5:5 cadence 120Hz signal.

In the new Movie mode, a small amount of de‐judder remains active, working in combination with the ‘de‐blur’ feature, to counter the inherent blur of sample‐and‐hold display technologies such as OLED but, essentially for movie-purists and sports fans, without the visible artefacts or ‘soap opera’ effects. This setting is ideal for movie‐purists and sports lovers.
