There were rumblings this summer and it is now clear that next-gen AAA games will cost up to $70 / €80, an increase over current-gen games.
Next-gen prices
The standard price for a so-called AAA game, the biggest games out there, has remained flat at $60 or €70 for over a decade. Game studios are free to charge higher prices but this level has been the norm.
Next-gen games for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will in many cases cost more as studios are trying to make $70 or €80 the new norm.
Earlier this summer, 2K Games was the first studio to confirm that it will raise the price of NBA 2K21 by $10 to $70, if you want it on next-gen consoles. The price for a current-gen version of the game will remain the same.
Not long after, Activision confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will also cost $70, up from $60 for the current-gen version.

Demon's Souls will cost $70 / €80
And now, Sony has confirmed that its game studios will also charge higher prices in some instances. Two of the PS5 launch titles, Demon's Souls and Destruction AllStars, will carry the new $70 / €80 price tag.
Meanwhile, game subscription services are gaining steam. For $10 per month you can get access to a library of games through PlayStation Now or Xbox Game Pass. More recently, Apple entered the arena with its game subscription service Apple Arcade ($5/month) and Nvidia with its GeForce Now ($5/month) service that lets you stream your purchased PC games.
