New WiSA box transmits TV audio wirelessly to speakers

06 Oct 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

WiSA is launching the SoundSend box that allows you to transmit TV audio wirelessly to compatible speakers from Harman, B&O, Klipsch, and others.

Wireless TV audio with Atmos

The new transmitter box, WiSA SoundSend, can receive sound from the TV via HDMI ARC or the optical port (with limitations), and then pass TV audio wirelessly to compatible speakers. WiSA is supported in speakers from companies such as Bang & Olufsen, Harman, Klipsch, Savant, Dynaudio, and Enclave Audio. It is also supported in some receivers and TVs (that do not require the new box).

WiSA SoundSend supports audio quality in up to 24bit/96kHz. It can transmit up to eight channels in Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. It can also decode and transmit Dolby Atmos. DTS on the other hand is not supported. The system can be set up and fine-tuned via a mobile app. Since WiSA runs on its own dedicated frequency band, it does not require WiFi or any other type of network to work. - "My Zone, one of SoundSend’s features, perfects the system by easily calibrating each speaker to the listener’s location to create a sweet spot for the best possible entertainment experience. The WiSA SoundSend brings true cinema sound to any home, making immersive audio available for everyone with a smart TV," the company added. WiSA is developed by a consortium of companies that have joined forces to create a standard for wireless TV audio. There are also proprietary protocols in the market such as Apple AirPlay, which supports wireless TV audio from Apple TV, and DTS Play-Fi, which Philips is the first TV maker to support. WiSA SoundSend will launch globally in November 2020 for 179 dollars. Further information can be found on wisaassociation.org.
