Vizio releases AMD FreeSync update for 2020/21 P-Series & M-Series TVs

29 Oct 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

Vizio's latest P-Series LCD TVs now boast AMD FreeSync Premium support while the M-Series LCD TVs have gained basic AMD FreeSync. But what about the OLED TVs?

FreeSync on Vizio LCD TVs

Vizio has started rolling out a firmware update to enable AMD FreeSync on its 2020/2021 models. The feature was announced at CES 2020, but was not ready in time for the launch of the new TVs back in July. The company confirmed that its 2020/2021 P-Series and P-Series Quantum LCD TVs are certified AMD FreeSync Premium while the M-Series LCD TVs are certified with basic AMD FreeSync support. The Premium tier covers support for 120Hz and LFC (Low Framerate Compensation). - "Today's games are more demanding than ever, and so are today's gamers. We worked side by side with AMD to ensure AMD FreeSync technology would be available on our 2021 Collection, in turn giving our users a smooth, high refresh rate gaming experience," said Bill Baxter, CTO, Vizio. FreeSync is a so-called VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) system that must be supported at both ends, meaning the console/PC and display/TV. It delivers smoother gameplay with lower lag by having the two devices synchronize frame rate output and display refresh rate in real-time. - "To simplify connection and compatibility with HDMI devices that support VRR, the automatic VRR verification process has been improved as well. On P-Series, you also can take advantage of the Nvidia RTX30, a new 4K 120fps HDMI graphics card, for frustration-free, high-performance connectivity that supports multiple VRR technologies," the company added.

No FreeSync for OLED TVs?

Curiously, Vizio is not rolling out FreeSync support for its new OLED TVs despite them having the same 'ProGaming Engine' that Vizio promoted as having FreeSync support at its CES 2020 announcement. - "New for the 2020 lineup, is the introduction of Vizio' ProGaming Engine that takes Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 performance to the next level with support for Variable Refresh Rates (VRR), AMD FreeSync, and resolutions up to 4K at 120Hz for greater motion clarity and smoother gameplay," the company said at CES 2020. The OLED TVs do support HDMI VRR though, and with a wider VRR range (40-120Hz) than the LCD models (48-120Hz). PlayStation 5 will support HDMI VRR while Xbox Series X/S will support both HDMI VRR and AMD FreeSync. We are following up with Vizio for confirmation on its plans regarding the OLED models. The firmware update is rolling out now for the models listed below.
