Netflix is raising its prices again, premium tier is now $18/month

Netflix is raising prices again in the US where its premium plan will now cost $18 per month and the standard plan $14 per month.

4K gets more expensive
The basic plan will remain $9 per month, if you can accept SD streaming quality and one stream at a time. The standard plan with HD resolution and two simultaneous streams increases from $13 to $14 per month.

The biggest jump is seen with the premium plan that increases from $16 to $18 per month, meaning that Netflix's best video (4K HDR) and audio (Dolby Atmos) will get more expensive. The premium plan also includes four simultaneous streams.

- "We understand people have more entertainment choices than ever and we're committed to delivering an even better experience for our members. We're updating our prices so that we can continue to offer more variety of TV shows and films," the company said in a statement.



The new prices will take effect immediately for new subscribers. Existing subscribers will receive an email notifying them of the price increase over the next few months.

In a statement to The Verge, Netflix said that the change "in the US does not influence or indicate a global price change". Historically, however, price changes in one region have presaged price changes in other major regions, although it may take some time. The company hiked prices in Canada earlier this month.

Netflix is still the leading streaming service globally by a wide margin, but the competitive field has  intensified in the last year or so with the launch of Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Peacock.
