21 Dec 2020 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony is planning to "unveil the next breakthrough in premium direct-view display technology" on January 6, according to a teaser video by the company.

New microLED solution?

Sony has released a teaser video that that outlines its "innovation and milestones in display technology" leading up to the first microLED TV prototype (Sony's CES 2012 prototype) and later modular microLED technology, similar to Samsung's 'The Wall'. The video then goes on to tease the "next Sony breakthrough in premium direct-view display technology". The company is planning to make the announcement on January 6, 2021, leading up to the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

- "Join us as we unveil the next Sony breakthrough in premium direct-view display technology, designed to faithfully bring content to life as the creator intended," said Sony. The video strongly hints that the announcement is related to microLED technology. The video was posted by Sony Professional Solutions, so it may be something intended for the custom installer market. Samsung recently announced the first pre-fabricated (non-modular) microLED TV. It will launch in early 2021. However, the 110-inch TV will cost over $150,000 dollars. As always, FlatpanelsHD will be covering CES 2021 and all related announcements. Look forward to January 2021.
