LG announces 8K & 4K "QNED" LCD TVs with HDMI 2.1, webOS 6.0

11 Jan 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG will launch its 2021 premium LCD TVs with miniLED backlight as "QNED miniLED". The company has announced 8K QNED99 and QNED95 as well as 4K QNED90 models at CES 2021.

"QNED" takes on "QLED"

As announced before CES 2021, LG will add new technology to its top LCD TVs. The combination of "a new advanced LCD panel structure that combines Quantum NanoCell color technology with mini LED backlighting" equals "QNED miniLED", according to LG. "QNED" LCD TVs will compete head-to-head with Samsung's top LCD TVs that in 2021 will be known as "Neo QLED". Neither of the two represent a new display technology. Instead, these are LCD TVs with more a advanced LED backlight for less crude brightness control in up to a few thousand dimming zones. It is still a far cry from the millions of self-emitting pixels in OLED, which still represent LG's best TVs of 2021.

LG QNED LCD TV

LG will in 2021 launch its first miniLED LCD TVs that will be marketed as 'QNED miniLED'

There will be new 8K QNED99 and QNED95 models as well as 4K QNED90. The LCD TVs will be available in 65 to 86 inches. The company said that the former two will be powered by its most advanced Alpha 9 Gen4 video processor. - "LG’s latest intelligent processor, the α (Alpha) 9 Gen 4 AI, revamps the performance on the newest LG OLED TV models in the Z1, G1 and C1 series, LG QNED Mini LED TV models QNED99 and QNED95 and LG NanoCell TV models NANO99 and NANO95," saod LG. "The processor leverages deep learning to enhance upscaling, making content of any quality look picture-perfect on the large, self-emissive displays. LG’s newest processor features AI Picture Pro, which recognizes onscreen objects such as faces and bodies (8K models) and distinguishes between foregrounds and backgrounds, processing each object independently to make images more three-dimensional." LG's 4K QNED90 will be powered by the slightly less capable Alpha 7 Gen4 video processor but it will have an HDMI 2.1 feature that you will not find in the 8K models. While all of them come with HDMI 2.1 ports for 4K120 (or 8K), eARC and ALLM, only QNED90 will feature support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) for smoother gameplay.

LG will also sell 'NanoCell' LCD TVs in 2021

With webOS 6.0 & Game Optimizer

LG will continue to sell "NanoCell" LCD TVs in 2021 including upgraded Nano95 and Nano90 ranges. These will be more affordable than the company's new Q-series TVs. Like LG's new 2021 OLED TVs, its LCD models will feature a new 'Game Optimizer' menu as part of webOS 6.0. The company is also introducing a new remote control with sponsored keys for Netflix, Amazon and Disney+. - "Game Optimizer, featured in all LG 2021 webOS TVs including QNED Mini LED and NanoCell TVs, automatically applies the best picture settings according to the type of the game being played, whether it is a first-person shooter, role-playing game or real-time strategy title," the company said. "LG’s QNED90 Mini LED, NANO90 and NANO85 NanoCell TVs will also support variable refresh rate (VRR) for an outstanding experience for those who love gaming."
