Disney's streaming service, Disney+, has surpassed 100 million subscribers just 16 months after launch. The milestone "has inspired us to be even more ambitious", said Disney's CEO.
Disney+ to the moon
In late 2020, Netflix surpassed 200 million subscribers but Disney+ is gaining fast, with over 100 million subscribers spread across fewer regions. Disney+ launched in the US on November 12, 2019, and has since rolled out to additional regions.
- "The enormous success of Disney+ —which has now surpassed 100 million subscribers—has inspired us to be even more ambitious, and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content," said Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company . "In fact, we set a target of 100+ new titles per year, and this includes Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Our direct-to-consumer business is the Company’s top priority, and our robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth."

Before launch, Disney set a subscriber goal of 60-90 million subscribers by 2024. After less than two years in operation, Disney+ is now one of the world's largest streaming services and Disney says that the success has inspired it to be more ambitious. The company recently added a Star section in some regions, and Disney continues to debut new movies on Disney+, most recently Raya and the Last Dragon.
Disney+ has 10 Star Wars series, 10 Marvel series, and much more planned for the next few years.
