Netflix has started testing a new tool meant to curb password-sharing as well as unauthorized use of an account.
Is this your account?
The new tool asks users outside the household to verify the account via email or text code, or alternatively sign up for a free 30 day trial.
- "This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so," a Netflix spokesperson said.
The news was first reported by GammaWire. Multiple reports on social media signal that Netflix is testing the new approach on TV devices.

Password-sharing is a widespread practice between friends, and Netflix login credentials are even sometimes sold on the web unbeknownst to the account owner. Netflix's terms state that an account can be shared only with members of the household.
The company has previously said that it has to "learn to live with" password-sharing due to the many legitimate edge cases. However, it would appear that the company is now taking a more direct approach to crack down on the practice as the market starts to mature and more companies enter the fray.
