Samsungs adds cheaper QN700A 8K miniLED LCD TVs to line-up

Samsung is expanding its 2021 TV line-up in Europe with QN700A. The new 55- to 75-inch LCD TVs offer 8K resolution and miniLED backlight with zone dimming.

More 8K TVs from Samsung

QN700A sits below the QN800A and QN900A flagship TVs in Samsung's line-up. It replaces last year's Q700T as a more affordable range of 8K TVs with 50Hz LCD panels and a scaled-down video processor. New for 2021 is miniLED backlight with zone dimming. MiniLED in itself does not improve picture quality on LCD TVs and Samsung did not specify the number of dimming zones other than saying that QN700A, marketed as "Neo QLED", has 1.5x more zones than its conventional zone dimming "QLED" LCD TVs. - "With 1.5x more lighting zones than normal Quantum Matrix Technology, it works in tandem with the mighty AI-powered processor to deliver superb contrast and our sharpest 8K picture yet," the company said.

Unlike most of Samsung's 4K models, QN700A features the external One Connect box. It also comes with the latest smart features in Tizen 6.0. This includes features like Game Bar and 'Super Ultra Wide Game View' with support for 21:9 and 32:9 screen ratios. Update: Samsung now says that it has a single HDMI 2.1 port for 8K60. It can also do some 120Hz simulation, though, according to Samsung who points to its new 'Motion Xcelerator Turbo' system – we are not yet sure how it works. The 50Hz LCD panel sets obvious limitations here so if you are planning to connect next-gen game consoles, you should consider picking one of the high-end 4K models instead. QN700A has optional HDMI 2.1 features like eARC and ALLM that can be supported on standard HDMI 2.0 ports. Samsung QN700A is rolling out now in Europe. Its predecessor did not arrive on US shores so QN700A will most likely also be reserved for Europe.
