LG announces winners of its first OLED TV design competition

LG Display, in partnership with design magazine Dezeen, hosted its first OLED TV design competition. It says that the winning designs will be considered for commercialization.

Winning designs

Why host a competition? LG Display argues that OLED, with its self-emissive pixels, represents a paradigm shift in display technology. It can enable transparent, bendable, foldable and rollable displays. The goal was to dream up novel OLED TV concepts. - "Based on the unprecedented scalability of OLED, LG Display is continuing to push OLED into the mainstream through its strategy of open innovation," said Dr. Chang-ho Oh, Head of the TV Business Unit, LG Display. LG Display and UK design magazine Dezeen picked the winners of the 'OLED Go! Competition' amongst 220 entries from participants in more than 50 countries. 1st place (and 15000 Euro) was awarded to 'Scroll', which is "a completely new concept that utilizes LG Display’s transparent OLED screen to create an elegant and useful design". In 2nd place came 'Signal', which is "a foldable OLED screen that doubles up as a lamp" and in 3rd place came 'Console' that "arches over the viewer’s bed so that they can watch TV before bedtime".

Other design concepts

Other notable design concepts include 'Flag.R' (lets users view content in the perfect aspect ratio by rolling from side to side) and 'Trollie' (a wheeled home workout display that can be moved around and adjusted according to the user’s desired height). LG Display said that the award-winning designs will be considered for commercialization. However, it is worth noting that LG Display is the panel maker. It would have to convince LG Electronics, the consumer company, or other TV makers to play ball before any of the screens could appear on the market. LG Electronics has already launched design-oriented OLED TVs like the 'Rollable OLED TV' (RX) and the 'Wallpaper OLED TV' (WX). The latter was discontinued this year after four years on the market.
