Disney+ ended Q2 2021 with 116 million subscribers, up 12.4 million from Q1. The company announced new markets but also delays in eastern Europe. November 12 will be 'Disney+ Day'.
Disney+ in 2021–2022
Disney+ has yet to turn 2 years old but it has already amassed 116 million subscribers. That is more than double the 57.5 million it had a year ago.
- "[...] our direct-to-consumer business is performing very well, with a total of nearly 174 million subscriptions across Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu at the end of the quarter, and a host of new content coming to the platforms," said Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company.
The "host of new content" refers partly to November 12, which the company has dubbed 'Disney+ Day' to commemorate its launch day. So far, it has confirmed a Home Alone reboot, Home Sweet Home Alone, and Jungle Cruise (outside of Premier Access). Further plans will be announced later.
Disney did not announce new Premier Access titles. The upcoming Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will come to Disney+ 45 days after the theatrical debut. The company emphasized that distribution decisions are now made on "a film by film basis".
Disney+ will enter eight new markets in November including South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. It will expand its service – probably with Star – in Japan in October.
On the other hand Disney+ has delayed its launch in eastern Europe to summer 2022 to accommodate a wider launch that will also include South Africa and parts of the Middle East.
