Nvidia Shield is still running Android 9 from 2018. The company will skip Android 10 but it wants to assure users that a lot of development is still going into Shield.
An update on Shield updates
With Nvidia Shield seemingly stuck on Android 9, some users are getting anxious. Nvidia has provided security patches and Google recently pushed out its new Google TV-like homescreen to Shield, but nothing had been announced regarding Android version updates.
Nvidia has now finally given an update on the situation saying that it will skip Android 10 as it does not introduce any new essential user-facing features. The company did not comment specifically on Android 11, 12 or beyond, but assured users that development is still going into Shield.

- "SHIELD development is still full steam ahead, we just had a release not too long ago. Android 10 was a no-op for android TV so we decided to skip it as the effort was large and there was essential no impact to end users other than the version string changing. that, we don't talk about our Roadmap ahead of time anymore, but i can tell you there is still a lot of development going into SHIELD," the company wrote on its website.
