14 Sep 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

Later this year, Sonos will add support for DTS Digital Surround to its S2 platform. Some Sonos products will gain support for Amazon Music's lossless audio and/or Dolby Atmos.

Sonos DTS support

In addition to Dolby's audio formats, Sonos will soon support DTS Digital Surround (5.1). DTS support will be added to Arc, Amp, Beam (both generations), Playbase, and Playbar through a software update. - "Sonos also announced plans to add support for decoding DTS Digital Surround later this year via the S2 platform on Playbar, Playbase, Amp, both generations of Beam and Arc." DTS support was announced together with the launch of the second-generation Beam soundbar. The move should please disc collectors although Sonos will still lack support for more sophisticated and higher-quality DTS audio formats such as DTS:X and DTS-HD.

Lossless & Dolby Atmos music

In addition, Sonos will add support for Amazon Music's 'Ultra HD' audio, meaning lossless audio up to 24-bit / 48kHz as well as Dolby Atmos Music. - "Launching later this year in select markets, Sonos plans to support Amazon Music’s Ultra High Definition audio, which will allow listeners to hear tracks in lossless audio up to 24-bit / 48kHz on their Sonos speakers, as well as Dolby Atmos Music, an immersive audio format that breaks the boundaries of traditional studio recordings and puts you inside the song, revealing every detail of the music," the company said. Amazon Music's Dolby Atmos will be supported on Sonos Arc and Beam (Gen 2), while Amazon Music's lossless audio (called 'Ultra HD') will be supported on all S2 devices, except Play:1, Play:3, Playbase, and Playbar. Sonos has not outlined plans to support Dolby Atmos music from other music services such as Apple Music. The new features will be added with a software update later this year.
