DTS:X support is coming to Vestel-made TVs

DTS:X for TV is a solution designed to support all DTS-encoded content including DTS:X over HDMI eARC. It is coming soon to TVs produced by Vestel, which is largest OEM TV maker in Europe.

DTS:X for TVs

In 2019, MediaTek and DTS announced a partnership to bring DTS:X support to MediaTek-powered TVs such as Android TVs. They had expected the first TVs to arrive in late 2019 or 2020 but nothing of significance materialized. A new partnership with Vestel could finally bring DTS:X support to TVs. Vestel is/was the OEM of entry-level and some mid-range TVs from Finlux, Grundig, Hitachi, JVC, Panasonic, Polaroid, Sanyo, Strong, Toshiba, Thomson, and many others. - "Bringing DTS:X to a mainstream television audience through our collaboration with Vestel is a landmark moment for immersive TV audio in Europe," said Gabriel Cosgrave, general manager, EMEA, Xperi. "Millions more consumers now have the ability to experience fully immersive audio directly from their TV, meaning their home entertainment experience can truly come to life." - "We are proud to be one of the first European TV manufacturers certified for DTS:X," said Baris Altinkaya, deputy general manager of product management, Vestel. DTS:X for TV is a solution designed to be supported in hardware on a single or dual-core SoC. It is fully backwards compatible with all existing DTS-encoded content including DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio, the company explained. It also supports DTS:X for streaming video.
The company's description: "Televisions featuring DTS:X are compatible with any DTS content connected to the TV from HDMI, USB and OTT streaming services. The solution includes a DTS:X transcoder capable of outputting DTS Digital Surround over S/PDIF and ARC (audio return channel) and can output a DTS:X lossless bitstream via eARC (enhanced audio return channel) to connected devices such as DTS:X-enabled A/V receivers or sound bars for a seamless DTS home entertainment experience. The DTS:X solution for TV is a must-have for the IMAX Enhanced program, and it has also been adopted in the Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) spec for Europe. DTS:X for TV is compatible with the DTS Virtual:X audio post-processing solution to deliver the best possible audio experience from immersive content played over a TV’s internal speakers."
DTS:X is an alternative to Dolby Atmos, which has been gaining momentum in recent years. Xperi reiterated that its "DTS:X solution for TV is a must-have for the IMAX Enhanced" – something it also said in 2019. Most IMAX Enhanced certified TVs today feature Dolby Atmos but lack support for DTS:X.
