HBO Max starts rolling out promised update to its buggy TV app

28 Sep 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

The update has arrived on Roku and PlayStation where it delivers a much improved user experience, according to user reports. It will arrive later on Apple TV, Smart TV, and more devices.

HBO Max fix

Users have been complaining about the buggy and slow HBO Max app since launch and this summer the company promised to "replace every single connected TV app in the next four or five months" (via Vulture). The promised update has now started rolling out as version 50.45. Rok, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are first in line while Apple TV users should expect the update to arrive later this year. Users of the mobile and 'web-based' app (universal app) on Smart TVs and other platforms must wait until early next year. The update arrives with a largely unchanged user interface but significant performance, stability and bug fixes under the hood, according to users. One reddit user wrote that he/she "just updated now to Roku version 50.45 and it actually works for the first time since they started the service" while another user reported that "it's a night and day difference for me on PS4". The old HBO Max app is a repurposed version of the HBO Go/Now app whereas the updated app builds on new foundation developed by You.i TV which WarnerMedia acquired last year. - Source: HBO Max, reddit (2)
