Samsung has announced that support for the new unifying smart home standard, Matter, will be folded into SmartThings on Smart TVs, Galaxy devices, hubs, and more next year.
Matter in SmartThings
Matter (formerly CHIP) was announced in late 2019 as a new royalty-free smart home standard that aims to achieve interoperability across ecosystems, products, and brands.
- "Samsung SmartThings, the premier technology enabling connected living and driving the future of IoT, today announced the addition of the new protocol, Matter, allowing users to control Matter-enabled devices using their multiple Samsung products," the company announced at SDC21 this week.
Samsung is a founding member of the group behind Matter together with other major companies like Amazon, Apple (added Matter support with iOS/tvOS 15), Google, IKEA, and Zigbee – over 170 members in total.

Matter will be folded into SmartThings next year
The first Matter compatible home accessories will debut in 2022 and Samsung is also planning to bring Matter support to multiple products in 2022.
- "Samsung will bring Matter to multiple products in 2022 as the new standard becomes available and fully integrates into the SmartThings platform."
It is probably safe to assume that Samsung's 2022 Smart TVs will support Matter and since the company is folding Matter into SmartThings, which is already supported in some Samsung Smart TVs, it would seem that there is a chance that at least some older Smart TVs will also gain support for Matter. We expect to get more details at CES 2022 in January.
