Samsung has announced that it is developing a new cloud gaming platform to let users stream games to Smart TVs – no game console required.

There is GeForce Now, Google Stadia, PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass (xCloud) but neither of these are currently available on Samsung Smart TVs.
At SDC21, Samsung announced that it is developing a new cloud gaming platform for its Tizen-based Smart TVs. Tizen is now powering over 200 million devices, according to the company. This includes both Smart TVs and other devices like home appliances.
- "To diversify your game selection on Samsung Smart TVs, we are developing a new Cloud Game Platform. This means that soon you will be able to enjoy games without purchasing high-end hardware, and developers can easily apply Samsung Smart TV's seamless, immersive experience to new games. All of this is possible with Samsung's Smart TVs powered by Tizen," said Yongjae Kim, SVP of Visual Display Software R&D, Samsung.

Samsung did not elaborate much on its plans but did say that it working closely with its current service partners, which may or may not include some of the existing players – or perhaps Netflix.
- "We are currently working on web-based cloud games, with the goal of allowing users to play the latest games on their Samsung Smart TV equipped with the Tizen platform – all without the latest consoles or expensive graphic cards. In order to achieve this, we are working closely with our current service partners," the company added.

In 2012, Samsung partnered with Gaikai to bring cloud gaming to its Smart TVs but the partnership ended soon after because Sony acquired Gaikai to power its PlayStation Now game streaming service.
We expect to hear more about the project in the near future, perhaps as soon as January at CES 2022.
